Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited was incorporated in 1989 as a public limited company with the main objective of establishing a mineral processing unit for value addition of mineral sand.
The company’s chief promoter, Dr. S N Sasidharan Kartha was an NRI businessman based in Saudi Arabia. It was the time when Government of India company Indian Rare Earths Limited(IRE) was exporting ilmenite from Kerala without any value addition and Kerala State PSU, Travancore Cochin Chemicals (TCC) was facing crisis due to lack of demand for its product. For creating value addition for the product of IRE and for the existence and development of TCC, Government of Kerala invited Dr. Kartha to set up this mineral value addition unit.
The unit was set up in Cochin as a 100% Export Oriented Unit (EOU) to produce Synthetic Rutile using ilmenite as the main raw material, with equity participation from Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation limited.
